How can the GitHub MCP server access a repository's wiki?

I'm using github-mcp-server (github/github-mcp-server) and need to search my project's wiki pages, but search_code returns nothing for repo:org/repo.wiki, type:wiki, or type:wikis, and there are no wiki-specific tools. How can the MCP server access wiki content?

Closed as not planned. GitHub's REST and GraphQL APIs have no endpoints for reading, searching, or managing wiki pages, so the MCP server's existing tools (including search_code) cannot reach wiki content. The maintainers confirmed this after investigating the possibility.

The thread does confirm one thing: the wiki is reachable as a Git remote. A commenter ran git ls-remote https://$GH_PUBLIC_REPOS@github.com/robbiemu/aclarai.wiki.git and got HEAD and refs/heads/master, showing the Git transfer protocol works on .wiki.git URLs. However, the maintainers decided against building wiki tools on top of that: supporting read, search, write, synchronization, and conflict handling for a separate Git-backed implementation was too costly relative to their priorities. They said they will reevaluate if native API support becomes available.

The only workaround described in the thread: keep documentation as Markdown in a regular GitHub repo. One commenter reported that GitHub Copilot chat's #githubRepo tool searches such repos well for AI-searchable internal docs.

General advice: if you put a PAT in a clone or ls-remote URL, it can leak into shell history and into the stored remote URL of any clone; prefer a credential helper or Git's env-var-based credential handling.

What @robbiemu tried on GitHub (Didn't work)

The reporter tried the search_code tool with repo:org/repo.wiki, type:wiki, and type:wikis query forms to find wiki pages; none returned wiki content.

What @robbiemu tried on GitHub (Worked)

Tested the Git transfer protocol with git ls-remote https://$GH_PUBLIC_REPOS@github.com/robbiemu/aclarai.wiki.git, which returned the wiki's HEAD and refs/heads/master, proving the wiki is reachable as a Git remote.

What @Jikodis tried on GitHub (Worked)

Described an existing setup where docs live as Markdown in a regular GitHub repo and are searched with the #githubRepo tool in GitHub Copilot chat, reporting it works well for AI-searchable internal documentation.
