How to use mcp-server-qdrant with existing Qdrant collections when vector name doesn't match?
Using mcp-server-qdrant with MCP Inspector, adding vectors to an existing Qdrant collection fails with a 400 Bad Request: "Wrong input: Vector with name fast-all-minilm-l6-v2 is not configured in this collection". The server expects FastEmbed-style vector names (fast-), but existing collections may use other names. Is there a way to point the server at an existing collection, or must a new collection be created?

Status: still open as of the last thread update (October 2025); no fix or release was mentioned. The maintainer explained that the server is built around FastEmbed: it assumes vectors are created with FastEmbed, uses vector names like fast-all-MiniLM-L6-v2, and expects FastEmbed's payload structure. There is no option to set the collection or vector name, and the reporter noted collection names can't be changed after creation, so existing collections with other vector names (e.g. text-dense/text-sparse) cannot be used directly.
What works: create a new collection whose vector name exactly matches the FastEmbed name for your embedding model, then use the MCP server against it. Reporters confirmed this works for all-MiniLM-L6-v2.
What doesn't: using an existing collection with vector names text-dense/text-sparse even when the same model (bge-small-en-v1.5) is configured, and using Ollama-hosted nomic-embed-text (same error: fast-nomic-embed-text-v1 not configured). One user also reported EMBEDDING_PROVIDER only accepts "embedded", so pointing it at an Ollama API is not possible yet.
If you must keep an existing collection, general advice: the thread describes no supported path, so you would need to upsert vectors yourself with the expected vector name and a FastEmbed-compatible payload, outside the MCP server. The maintainer said extending the server to other embedding providers is planned and asked which providers users want; Ollama/nomic-embed-text was requested. Watch the issue for updates.
Did this work for you? What a GitHub user tried on GitHub (Worked)
Create a new collection with vector name fast-all-minilm-l6-v2 and use it through the MCP server. Confirmed to work for new collections, though it does not help with existing ones.

Point MCP Inspector at an existing collection that uses a different vector name. Got 400 "Vector with name fast-all-minilm-l6-v2 is not configured in this collection".

Use Ollama-hosted nomic-embed-text with the MCP server. Got the same kind of error: "fast-nomic-embed-text-v1 is not configured in this collection".

Did this work for you? What @rnethi25 tried on GitHub (Didn't work)
Configure the same FastEmbed model (bge-small-en-v1.5) while using an existing collection whose vector names are text-dense and text-sparse. Still got a 400 error.

Did this work for you? What @demon-ru tried on GitHub (Didn't work)
Reported that EMBEDDING_PROVIDER only accepts "embedded", so specifying an Ollama API endpoint for embeddings was not possible.
