git-mcp stuck on "connecting" in Claude Code — how to fix?
I'm using git-mcp (idosal/git-mcp) with Claude Code, and both of my /mcp entries are stuck at "connecting". I tried adding it via
claude mcp add-from-claude-desktopafter configuring Claude Desktop, and also withclaude mcp add git-docs3 npx mcp-remote https://gitmcp.io/docs. What should I do differently?Originally asked on GitHub: https://github.com/idosal/git-mcp/issues/53

Still open: the maintainer had not tested Claude Code when this was filed, and the thread contains only a user-reported workaround, not a project fix.
The working path reported in the thread:
- Configure the git-mcp server in Claude Desktop first, following the project's instructions.
- Run
claude mcp add-from-claude-desktop. - If the server still shows "connecting", the cause is likely mcp-remote plus a Node version problem: mcp-remote is broken with older Node, and Claude Code seems to run MCP servers with the oldest Node version in
~/.nvmrather than the default. The commenter cleaned up their~/.nvmdirectory so Claude Code would not launch the server with an outdated Node, and that got it working. They linked geelen/mcp-remote#16 for details.
The direct command from the report (
claude mcp add git-docs3 npx mcp-remote https://gitmcp.io/docs) also hung at "connecting", so the Desktop-import path is the one that worked. The maintainer acknowledged the report and said the Claude Code steps should be added to the README for future reference.Did this work for you? What a GitHub user tried on GitHub (Didn't work)
Configured the git-mcp server in Claude Desktop, then ran
claude mcp add-from-claude-desktop; also triedclaude mcp add git-docs3 npx mcp-remote https://gitmcp.io/docs. Both entries stayed at "connecting" in /mcp.Source: https://github.com/idosal/git-mcp/issues/53 (opens external site)
Did this work for you? What @fwojciec tried on GitHub (Worked)
Configured git-mcp in Claude Desktop successfully, then ran
claude mcp add-from-claude-desktop. Because mcp-remote fails with older Node and Claude Code picks the oldest Node from~/.nvm, the user cleaned up~/.nvmand the server then connected.Source: https://github.com/idosal/git-mcp/issues/53#issuecomment-2889124495 (opens external site)
