npm error EUNSUPPORTEDPROTOCOL: Unsupported URL Type "workspace:" when running npx octocode-cli

Running npx octocode-cli on macOS with Node v24.12.0 and npm 11.6.2 fails with npm error code EUNSUPPORTEDPROTOCOL and Unsupported URL Type "workspace:": workspace:^. Why does this happen and how can I install octocode-cli?

Fixed — the maintainer confirmed it was a bundle issue with the published package and said the latest version should work; the issue is closed as completed.

The error happens during npx octocode-cli (npm 11.6.2, Node v24.12.0) when npm resolves the dependencies of octocode-cli@1.2.8 and hits npm error code EUNSUPPORTEDPROTOCOL with Unsupported URL Type "workspace:": workspace:^. The thread does not identify which dependency caused it, only that it was a packaging problem on the package side.

Until the fix, the workaround that worked in the thread was to install the previous release:

      bash
      npx octocode-cli@1.2.6

After the maintainer's fix, retry the normal command:

      bash
      npx octocode-cli

If it still fails, pinning an older version as above is the only workaround reported in the thread. General advice: since the failure happens while npm builds the dependency tree, you probably don't need to change npm configuration or clear the cache — just make sure you're trying the latest published version first.

What a GitHub user tried on GitHub (Didn't work)

Ran npx octocode-cli with Node v24.12.0 and npm 11.6.2; npm fetched octocode-cli@1.2.8, then failed during dependency resolution with EUNSUPPORTEDPROTOCOL and Unsupported URL Type "workspace:": workspace:^.

What @fabioalmeida100 tried on GitHub (Worked)

Installed the previous release with npx octocode-cli@1.2.6; the commenter said this resolved the problem.
