What it does

DesktopCommanderMCP is an MCP server that extends Claude's capabilities with terminal command execution, file system search, and file diff editing. It enables Claude to interact directly with your computer's command line and file system for automation and development tasks.

Who it’s for

Developers and technical builders who want Claude to automate local development workflows, system administration tasks, or file management. Not recommended for non-technical users or production environments without careful sandboxing.

Copy-paste setup

Check these steps against the project’s own instructions before running anything.

Install from npm (check the project page first):

bash
npx -y DesktopCommanderMCP

Follow the official instructions: https://www.npmjs.com/package/@wonderwhy-er/desktop-commander (opens external site)

Risks

  • Unrestricted command execution: Claude can run arbitrary terminal commands with your user's full permissions; malicious prompts or jailbreaks could delete files, exfiltrate data, or compromise your system.
  • Prompt injection via file contents: If Claude reads attacker-controlled files or processes untrusted input, malicious content could manipulate Claude into executing harmful commands.
  • Credential exposure: Commands may leak environment variables, API keys, or SSH credentials to Claude's context if not carefully filtered.
  • Supply chain dependency: Relies on npm package maintenance; any compromise of the package or its dependencies could inject malicious code into your system.
  • No built-in sandboxing: Operates with full user permissions; there is no capability-based restriction or allowlist enforcement by default.

How to stay secure

Least-privilege permissions

  • Run Claude/MCP in a dedicated non-admin user account with minimal file system permissions; restrict access to only directories Claude needs (e.g., project folders, not home or system directories).
  • Use OS-level access controls (Linux: umask, chown, chmod; macOS: chmod; Windows: NTFS permissions) to deny write access to sensitive directories like ~/.ssh, ~/.config, and system folders.
  • Unset or mask sensitive environment variables before launching MCP: remove AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID, GITHUB_TOKEN, SSH_AUTH_SOCK, and similar from the user's shell profile.
  • Disable shell history logging for the MCP session or redirect to /dev/null to prevent credentials from being logged.

Network isolation

  • Run MCP on a machine without direct internet access, or use a firewall to block outbound connections except to Claude's API endpoint.
  • Disable or remove SSH keys and cloud CLI credentials (e.g., aws, gcloud, kubectl) from the MCP user's account if not strictly required.
  • Block DNS resolution of known data exfiltration destinations by configuring local DNS blocklists or a restrictive firewall policy.

Monitoring

  • Log all MCP command execution to an immutable audit log (e.g., auditd on Linux, or redirect stdout/stderr to a monitored file) and review daily for suspicious patterns.
  • Set file integrity monitoring (e.g., aide, osquery, or tripwire) on critical directories to detect unauthorized modifications.
  • Monitor outbound network connections and process spawning using tools like netstat, ss, or osquery to catch data exfiltration or lateral movement attempts.

Red flags to watch for

  • Commands that cat/exfiltrate files outside the intended project scope, access .ssh, .aws, or .config directories, or pipe output to network utilities (curl, nc, wget).
  • Execution of unexpected interpreters (python, perl, bash -c) or obfuscated commands; unusual child processes spawned from terminal commands.
  • Environment variable access, credential file reads, or attempts to modify system binaries, cron jobs, or shell configuration files.
  • Sudden spikes in CPU/disk usage, unexpected network traffic, or changes to sensitive files during or immediately after MCP execution.

Alternatives

  • Cline – Open-source VS Code extension for Claude with sandboxed terminal and file access, designed for safer local automation.
  • E2B Code Interpreter – Managed, sandboxed execution environment for Claude that isolates code and commands from your host system.
  • OpenInterpreter – Python-based alternative offering local command execution with opt-in safety constraints.
  • Anthropic's native bash tool – If using Claude API directly, implement your own restricted command wrapper rather than a broad MCP server.
