Claude Code plugin install could skip the pinned code version and install attacker code

Product
Claude Code
CVE
CVE-2026-86063
Affected
npm/@anthropic-ai/claude-code < 2.1.179
Fixed in
2.1.179

Last verified against sources: October 26, 2026

Am I affected?

Claude Code: affected npm/@anthropic-ai/claude-code < 2.1.179. Fixed in 2.1.179.

  • Check your version: run npm ls @anthropic-ai/claude-code. Versions < 2.1.179 of @anthropic-ai/claude-code are affected. [1]

What to do now

  1. Upgrade to the fixed version: run npm install @anthropic-ai/claude-code@2.1.179 (first patched version 2.1.179). [1]
  2. If you use standard Claude Code auto-update, you have already received the fix. [1]
  3. If you update manually, update to the latest version. [1]

General practice, not from the source: if the affected software could read tokens or credentials, rotate them after upgrading; pin versions and review changes before updating tools your agents run.

Discuss this incident

What happened

  • The plugin install flow in Claude Code and Claude Desktop used the git checkout command to fetch a marketplace's pinned commit SHA. [1]
  • That flow did not check that the code it ended up with matched the pinned SHA. [1]
  • An attacker who controlled a plugin's upstream repository could make a branch named exactly like the pinned 40-character SHA. [1]
  • The checkout then quietly used the attacker's branch tip instead of the reviewed commit, so attacker-controlled code was installed and the pinned hash was bypassed. [1]

Impact

  • An attacker could get their own code installed in place of the code that was reviewed. [1]
  • This only worked if a user installed a malicious plugin, pinned to a safe hash, and the plugin source was hosted on a git host that allowed branch names shaped like a SHA. [1]

What was done

  • The fix has already reached users on standard Claude Code auto-update. [1]
  • Users who update manually are advised to update to the latest version. [1]
  • Version 2.1.179 is the patched version of npm/@anthropic-ai/claude-code. [1]
