    Zed agent panel: "Failed to generate summary" when creating a thread from summary

    In Zed's agent panel (0.201.4 on macOS 15.6.1, GitHub Copilot GPT-5), "New thread from summary" flashes the summary chip and then fails with "Failed to generate summary". Logs show "Invalid schema for function 'noop'", "missing field offset", and an Anthropic credentials error. Why does summary generation fail, and is there a fix?

      Status: the issue was closed as NOT_PLANNED and was still reproducible as of December 2025; no official fix was posted in the thread.

      A contributor could not reproduce it on Zed 0.201.5/Nightly and asked whether settings.json contains a thread_summary_model block pointing at a provider/model that is no longer available, for example:

      json
      "agent": {
        "thread_summary_model": {
          "provider": "anthropic",
          "model": "claude-3-5-haiku-latest"
        }
      }

      If you have that block, comment it out and retry. That was not the cause for the reporter, whose agent block only set default_model to copilot_chat/gpt-5.

      The thread does not identify one single fix. One user found that Zed 0.200.5 generated summaries fine, but 0.201.5 and Preview 0.202.1 failed, even with a fresh .config/zed/ directory. Another user later hit the same "Failed to generate summary" on Zed 0.216.0 (Linux) with Copilot's raptor model; the log showed "prompt token count of 197958 exceeds the limit of 128000". One commenter suggested setting max_tokens to about 70% of the model's maximum token count (general advice, unconfirmed). Another user reported the failure only when using Amazon Bedrock, with unrelated Amazon Bedrock DBus errors in the logs.

      Practical steps from the thread: check your agent settings for a stale thread_summary_model entry, inspect the full Zed log (the notification text alone hides the underlying API error), and if you need summaries now, roll back to a version where it worked (0.200.5 worked for one user).

      What @lancewilhelm tried on GitHub (Didn't work)

      Reporter opened a previous agent thread, set the model to GitHub Copilot GPT-5, and chose "New thread from summary". Restarting Zed and logging out/in of the Zed account did not fix it.

      What @notpeter tried on GitHub (Didn't work)

      A contributor could not reproduce on Zed 0.201.5/Nightly and suggested removing any thread_summary_model block pointing at a provider/model that is no longer available (e.g. Anthropic claude-3-5-haiku-latest) from settings.json. The reporter confirmed no such block existed.

      What @lancewilhelm tried on GitHub (Partly worked)

      Commenter tried Zed 0.201.5 and Preview 0.202.1 with a fresh .config/zed directory; both failed. Rolling back to Zed 0.200.5 worked, but updating again to 0.201.5 failed.

      What @ichadhr tried on GitHub (Outcome unclear)

      Commenter suggested setting max_tokens to roughly 70% of the model's maximum token count to avoid the token limit error seen in logs.
