Where are Claude Desktop MCP server logs on Windows?

While following the modelcontextprotocol/servers tutorial on Windows, the troubleshooting section says to tail ~/Library/Logs/Claude/mcp*.log on macOS. I tried the Windows equivalent C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Claude\Logs\, but the mcp-server-*.log files do not exist there. Where are the Claude Desktop MCP server logs actually stored on Windows, and why might no log file be generated at all?

This issue was closed as not planned; a maintainer asked for it to be re-posted in GitHub Discussions, so there is no official fix. The thread still gives two workarounds that worked for other users:

      1. Log location on Windows: a commenter confirmed the logs live in C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\Claude\logs, not the AppData\Local\Claude\Logs path you would guess from the Mac tutorial (~/Library/Logs/Claude/). The thread does not give exact filenames inside that folder, so list the directory and look for mcp*.log files (that last step is general advice).

      2. No log file is generated at all: another commenter found that when the MCP server name in the config contains a dash (for example mcp-server-filesystem), no mcp-server-SERVERNAME.log file is created. Renaming the server to a single word or camelCase (for example filesystem or filesystemServer) in the Claude Desktop config made the log file appear.

Note: the PowerShell Get-Content ... -Wait -Tail 20 and Git Bash tail commands quoted in the issue body were only pasted as suggestions; the thread does not confirm that they were run or that they work.

What a GitHub user tried on GitHub (Didn't work)

The reporter followed the MCP servers tutorial troubleshooting and looked for mcp.log and mcp-server-SERVERNAME.log at C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\Claude\Logs\ (the path they were told was the Windows equivalent), but the files were not there.

What @GersonGv tried on GitHub (Worked)

A commenter reported that on Windows the logs are actually in AppData\Roaming\Claude\logs rather than the AppData\Local\Claude\Logs path suggested in the issue.

What @alexitaccount4u tried on GitHub (Worked)

A commenter found that a dash in the MCP server name prevented the log file from being generated. Renaming the server to a single word or camelCase (removing the dash) made the log appear.
