How to manage GitHub Projects v2 with the GitHub MCP server?

The GitHub MCP server from modelcontextprotocol/servers does not include GitHub Projects v2 management tools such as create_project, get_project_items, or update_project_item. Is there a supported way to get project management capabilities when using this server from Claude Code or another MCP client?

Status: explained. The issue was closed as completed, but the thread does not state whether any project management tools were merged into modelcontextprotocol/servers. On 2025-04-19, a project member posted a deprecation notice: development for server-github has moved to the github/github-mcp-server repository, and pull requests to server-github are no longer being merged. For ongoing work, use github/github-mcp-server instead.

For GitHub Projects v2 functionality today, the thread reports two community MCP servers:

      1. Arclio/github-projects-mcp: one commenter tried it and said it works well, is quick and lean, but is not feature complete because its interface does not fully match GitHub's (see issue 7 in that repo).
      2. kunwarVivek/mcp-github-project-manager: one commenter tried it and found that its MCP responses include all tools, which confuses the AI so it cannot do anything with those responses (see issue 19 in that repo).

A contributor also pointed to GitHub's official GraphQL API documentation, which is the API used for Projects v2, if you want to build the tools yourself.

General advice: when using any community MCP server for GitHub, keep the token scope minimal, because the server can act with everything your token can access.

What @Morriz tried on GitHub (Partly worked)

Tried Arclio/github-projects-mcp. It works well, is quick and lean, but is not feature complete because its interface does not fully match GitHub's (linked to issue 7 in that repo).

What @Morriz tried on GitHub (Didn't work)

Tried kunwarVivek/mcp-github-project-manager. The MCP responses include all tools, which confuses the AI and prevents it from doing anything with those responses (linked to issue 19 in that repo).
