Does Atlassian MCP server support downloading Jira attachments?

I'm using the official atlassian-mcp-server with Claude Code and Cursor. I can fetch Jira issue metadata and Confluence page markdown, but I need to download file and image attachments (CSV, MD, screenshots) from tickets. Does the server support attachment downloads? If not, what workarounds actually work?

Still not supported as of the latest comment in the thread (May 2026). The issue was closed, but no maintainer response or fix was posted. The original verification (Nov 2025) confirmed that mcp__atlassian__getJiraIssue returns issue fields, custom fields, and attachment metadata, and mcp__atlassian__getConfluencePage returns full page markdown, but there is no tool for fetching attachment binary content.

Workarounds that were actually mentioned in the thread:

      • Use a separate browser MCP (e.g., browsermcp) to view images attached to Jira tickets. This gives the AI the visual context from screenshots that the Atlassian MCP server cannot provide.
      • One commenter said they have a workaround for attachment download, but described it as too clunky to share with teammates.

There is no official REST-based workaround in the thread. General advice: since attachment metadata from getJiraIssue includes attachment URLs, you can fetch those URLs directly via the Jira REST API (e.g., /rest/api/3/issue/{issueKey}/attachments) using the same credentials or PAT you configured for the MCP server, then pass the content to the model.

If you need this feature, Atlassian customers were pointed to internal Jira issue ECO-1265 to add yourself as a voter/watcher.

What @jaiechamsoft tried on GitHub (Worked)

A commenter used a separate browser MCP (browsermcp) to view images attached to Jira tickets and get the full task context that the Atlassian MCP server cannot provide.

What a GitHub user tried on GitHub (Didn't work)

The issue author verified the official MCP tools mcp__atlassian__getJiraIssue and mcp__atlassian__getConfluencePage, confirming attachments are not downloadable through the server.

What @ms-ati tried on GitHub (Outcome unclear)

A commenter suggested Atlassian customers add themselves as voters/watchers on internal Jira issue ECO-1265 to request attachment download support.
