Why does `python -m mcp_server_git` print nothing and the Docker container exit?
Why does
python -m mcp_server_gitprint nothing when I start it? I ran it inside a git directory on the modelcontextprotocol/servers git server, and the process gives no output; building and running the Docker container also just exits and clients cannot connect. Is this a broken server or expected behavior?Originally asked on GitHub: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/issues/1317

Status: explained. A maintainer closed the issue as superseded by the v2 release and noted that no defect was identified in the current code.
The reported behavior was against a pre-refactor release. The reference servers have since been rebuilt for the 2026-07-28 MCP specification and released as v2 (2.0.0 on npm for the TypeScript servers, 2026.10.19 on PyPI for the Python servers), each running on v2 of its SDK. Per the maintainer, a stdio MCP server prints nothing while it waits for a client, so no output from
python -m mcp_server_gitis expected. The behavior described "has either been fixed or no longer exists in the same form."The Docker container exiting was reported in the thread, but the maintainer's explanation only covers the stdio case and does not separate-diagnose the Docker behavior. If the problem still happens on a v2 release, the maintainer asked for a fresh issue with the version and steps to reproduce.
General advice (not from the thread): to verify a stdio MCP server, connect an MCP client to it instead of expecting startup output on the terminal, and check that the process stays alive while waiting.

Ran
python -m mcp_server_gitinside a git directory and got no output from the server. The maintainer later said no output is expected for a stdio MCP server, but the thread does not confirm a working client connection.Source: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/issues/1317 (opens external site)

Built and ran the Docker container; the container exits. The thread offers no separate diagnosis or resolution for this behavior.

Reported being unable to connect to mcp_server_git at all; no configuration details or error logs were posted.
