How do I use project management or custom memory types in mcp-memory-service?
I want to store project management artifacts (sprint goals, retrospectives, milestones, stakeholder requirements) in mcp-memory-service (doobidoo/mcp-memory-service), but the memory_type ontology only had software-development types like observation, decision, and pattern. Is there a way to use non-developer memory types or define my own?

Implemented in v10.12.0, released 2026-02-14. The
memory_typeontology now includes project management and general knowledge work types, so the developer-only limitation described in the issue is gone. From the maintainer's release notes:
-
Upgrade the package:
bashpip install --upgrade mcp-memory-service -
v10.12.0 expands the ontology from 29 to 75 total memory types:
- 12 Agile PM types
- 12 Traditional PM types
- 18 Knowledge Work types
-
The existing types were kept unchanged, so the release is fully backward compatible with previously stored memories.
-
For types not covered by the built-in set, custom type extension is supported through the
MCP_CUSTOM_MEMORY_TYPESenvironment variable.
General advice: the thread does not include an example value for
MCP_CUSTOM_MEMORY_TYPES, so check the v10.12.0 CHANGELOG entry to confirm the exact format the variable expects before adding it to your MCP server configuration.Did this work for you?-
