Azure MCP tools show mcp_azure prefix twice in VS Code Copilot logs
With the Azure MCP extension 0.8.0 on VS Code Insiders 1.105.0 (Windows), Copilot chat logs show tool names such as
mcp_azure_mcp_azmcp_cosmos_database_container_list— themcp_azure_prefix appears twice. Is the extension adding one prefix and VS Code adding the other, and is there a fix?Originally asked on GitHub: https://github.com/microsoft/mcp/issues/538

Status: explained — the issue is closed. The duplicate prefix comes from VS Code, not from the Azure MCP extension.
On VS Code Insiders 1.105.0 with the Azure MCP extension 0.8.0 (Windows), Copilot chat logs showed tool names like
mcp_azure_mcp_azmcp_cosmos_database_container_list. A maintainer traced the tool-name prefix computation to VS Code'smcpService.ts(line 232). A contributor then confirmed this is outside the extension's control: VS Code prependsmcp_(hardcoded) plusazure_mcp, which is the label the Azure MCP server extension uses when registering the server. The resultingmcp_azure_mcp_prefix is added on top of the server's own tool names, so the prefix appears doubled. The thread does not describe any fix or workaround. Maintainers discussed pushing back on the VS Code change, noting it could surprise MCP servers and break their telemetry. One maintainer added that assuming the tool name stays the same over time is not part of the official MCP design, and that supporting tool renames would require a dedicated feature. Whether the behavior has reached VS Code's main release is raised but not answered in the thread.
If you depend on these tool names in your own telemetry, the practical takeaway from the maintainers' discussion is that the full name
mcp_azure_mcp_...should not be treated as a stable identifier.Did this work for you? What @charris-msft tried on GitHub (Outcome unclear)
A contributor confirmed the root cause: VS Code adds
mcp_azure_mcp_(mcp_hardcoded,azure_mcpthe label the Azure MCP extension registers with). This explains the doubling, but no fix was proposed or verified.Source: https://github.com/microsoft/mcp/issues/538#issuecomment-3383440002 (opens external site)

A maintainer identified the cause by pointing to VS Code's
mcpService.tsline 232, where the MCP client computes the tool name prefix. This is a diagnosis, not a fix.Source: https://github.com/microsoft/mcp/issues/538#issuecomment-3358363079 (opens external site)

The reporter observed the duplicated
mcp_azure_mcp_prefix in Copilot chat logs with Azure MCP extension 0.8.0 on VS Code Insiders 1.105.0 (Windows) and asked whether the extension or VS Code was adding the extra prefix. No workaround was attempted.Source: https://github.com/microsoft/mcp/issues/538 (opens external site)
