    Playwright MCP fails to install in Cursor; v0.0.29 pin fixed it

    I used the official Playwright MCP config in Cursor (command npx, args ["@playwright/mcp@latest"]), but the MCP server fails to start and the tools are not enabled. This was reported against microsoft/playwright-mcp in July 2025 and reproduced on Windows. Is there a config change that makes it work in Cursor?

      Status: the GitHub issue is marked closed, but commenters said the problem was still occurring as of 2025-07-19, so upstream it is not confirmed fixed. The workaround that worked in this thread is pinning @playwright/mcp to v0.0.29 instead of using @latest.

      Config that worked in Cursor:

      { "mcpServers": { "playwright": { "command": "npx @playwright/mcp@v0.0.29", "env": {} } } }

      This uses one command string plus an empty env object, not the split command/args form. One commenter reported that Cursor then enabled the Playwright MCP tools, and another confirmed the same fix on Windows.

      The maintainer responded that following the installation instructions should work fine, but a commenter disagreed, saying they had followed the official README config exactly and that only downgrading to v0.0.29 helped. Another user asked whether restarting Cursor helps; nobody in the thread confirmed that alone fixed it. The official README form (command "npx" with args ["@playwright/mcp@latest"]) failed in this thread, so pinning v0.0.29 is the concrete fix reported by multiple users.

      What a GitHub user tried on GitHub (Didn't work)

      Used the official README config: command "npx" and args ["@playwright/mcp@latest"]. The MCP server did not install/start in Cursor.

      What @maurczz tried on GitHub (Worked)

      Pinned the package instead: command "npx @playwright/mcp@v0.0.29" with env {}. Cursor enabled the Playwright MCP tools with this config.

      What @g1ronn1mo tried on GitHub (Worked)

      Confirmed on Windows that the same v0.0.29 config fixed the problem in Cursor.

      What @maurczz tried on GitHub (Didn't work)

      After the maintainer said to follow the instructions, this commenter repeated that the official README config still failed and only downgrading to v0.0.29 helped.

      What @shabahmd tried on GitHub (Outcome unclear)

      Asked whether restarting Cursor might resolve the same error; no one in the thread confirmed that a restart fixed it.
