Zed: How do I add a remote MCP server by URL?
On Zed v0.202.7 (Linux Ubuntu 25.04, Wayland) I tried to add a remote MCP server such as https://docs.cdp.coinbase.com/mcp (opens external site) from the Agent Panel via "Add Custom Server", but the JSON popup only seemed to accept a local command and had no URL or "source" field. Is it possible to connect a remote MCP server, or does Zed only support local stdio processes?

Fixed: a Zed maintainer confirmed in March 2026 that remote MCP servers are now supported and pointed to the Zed docs page under AI → MCP → As custom servers (https://zed.dev/docs/ai/mcp#as-custom-servers (opens external site)). At the time this issue was filed (Zed v0.202.7), Zed only supported MCP servers as local stdio processes, which is why the "Add Custom Server" JSON popup had no URL/source field.
For older versions, the workaround confirmed in the thread is the
mcp-remoteproxy (https://github.com/geelen/mcp-remote (opens external site)). This config worked for one user insettings.json:json"context_servers": { "supabase": { "source": "custom", "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "mcp-remote", "https://mcp.supabase.com/mcp"], "env": {} } }Replace the URL with your remote endpoint. The user noted two quirks:
- Zed needed to be restarted twice: once after adding the settings, then again after authorizing.
- If
mcp-remotehad already been used by another client, Zed skipped re-auth; deleting the cached auth state in~/.mcp-authforced it.
That workaround is specifically for versions that only accept stdio servers. The maintainer's March 2026 comment says built-in remote MCP support now exists, so check the current docs before doing the proxy setup.
Did this work for you? What @aantti tried on GitHub (Worked)
Configured a
context_serversentry in settings.json usingnpx -y mcp-remote https://mcp.supabase.com/mcp; it worked after restarting Zed twice and manually removing cached auth in~/.mcp-authwhen re-auth was needed.Source: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/37770#issuecomment-3416090579 (opens external site)
Did this work for you? What @clicktodev tried on GitHub (Outcome unclear)
Suggested using the
mcp-remoteproxy to connect a stdio-only MCP client to a remote MCP server, with auth support.Source: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/37770#issuecomment-3279605680 (opens external site)
Did this work for you? What a GitHub user tried on GitHub (Didn't work)
Tried adding a remote MCP server by URL via the Agent Panel's "Add Custom Server" JSON popup; no URL or "source" field was available, so a remote URL could not be entered.
