Why does Roo-Code 3.19.6 auto-open the sidebar in every new VS Code window?

Why does Roo-Code 3.19.6 auto-open the sidebar in every new VS Code window? On VS Code 1.100.3 (macOS and Windows), a new window opens an Untitled file and then the right sidebar pops in about 500–1000 ms later, focused on Roo Code, stealing focus from the command I am about to run. Is this a known bug and is there a setting or fix to disable it?

Status: explained — the auto-open is a regression introduced by PR #4267, and a fix (PR #4548) was opened but not yet confirmed at the time the issue was closed.

The maintainer first confirmed that Roo Code has no code that deliberately opens the sidebar at startup and suggested checking VS Code's own sidebar/panel restoration settings. A reporter then bisected the extension and traced the trigger: on activation, McpHub.updateServerConnections() calls notifyWebviewOfServerChanges(), which calls ClineProvider.getInstance(). That method executes the SidebarProvider.focus command whenever no webview is visible yet, which opens the sidebar about 0.5–1 second after a new window opens. The reporter noted a caveat for their bisect tests: they closed the sidebar before closing each test window so VS Code would not restore it on reopen — that is a testing detail, not a workaround.

A collaborator opened PR #4548 with a proposed fix but asked volunteers to test it before shipping. One commenter planned to disable the Roo Code extension until the fix landed; the thread does not confirm whether that helped. As of the thread, no Roo Code setting disables the auto-open; outside the fix PR, the only suggestion was to review VS Code sidebar restoration settings.

What @bantic tried on GitHub (Worked)

Ran git bisect on the extension, testing each commit with the VS Code command 'Debug: Start Debugging and Stop on Entry' and closing the sidebar before closing each test window; this pinned the regression to PR #4267.

What @mrubens tried on GitHub (Outcome unclear)

A collaborator opened PR #4548 as a proposed fix but said it had not been deeply tested and asked volunteers to confirm whether it resolves the issue.

What @anthonyaquino83 tried on GitHub (Outcome unclear)

A commenter on Windows planned to disable the Roo Code extension until the bug was fixed; no result was reported in the thread.
