Roo-Code checkpoints missing? Check for nested git repositories
In Roo-Code (VS Code extension) versions 3.13.2 through 3.19.x, the checkpoint feature is missing or no checkpoints are created after tasks with many edits, using OpenRouter/Claude 3.7 Sonnet or Gemini 2.0 Flash. The Roo-Code output log shows: "Checkpoints are disabled because nested git repositories were detected in the workspace." How do I get checkpoints back?

The issue was closed as "can't reproduce" because no numbered reproduction steps were provided, but the thread identifies the cause: Roo-Code disables checkpoints whenever a nested git repository exists inside the workspace.
To confirm on your machine, open the Output panel in VS Code, select "Roo-Code" in the channel dropdown, and look for this log line:
[Task#getCheckpointService] initShadowGit -> Checkpoints are disabled because nested git repositories were detected in the workspace. Please remove or relocate nested git repositories to use the checkpoints feature.
One user's log (v3.19.7) named the offending nested repo as content-planner-cf-worker.git. Another user with the same symptom confirmed the fix: after removing the subrepo (a nested git repository inside the workspace), checkpoints started being created again.
Two other observations from the thread: a bot reply cited documentation saying checkpoints were an experimental opt-in since v3.3.15 and enabled by default since v3.7.7, and one user on v3.14.2 saw missing checkpoints only when the model edited files through an MCP server. A maintainer also asked whether checkpoints were enabled in the extension settings, so if you have no nested git repos and checkpoints still do not appear, double-check that setting as well.

Another user reported that a subrepo (nested git repository) inside their repo was the cause; after removing the subrepo, checkpoints started being created again.

Pasted the Roo-Code output log for v3.19.7 showing "Checkpoints are disabled because nested git repositories were detected in the workspace" and naming the nested repo as content-planner-cf-worker.git; this identified the mechanism but the user did not report applying the fix.

On v3.14.2, the user noticed checkpoints were missing only when the model edited files through the MCP server, while tasks not using MCP showed checkpoints; they also asked where the Output tab is located.

Reported on v3.13.2 with OpenRouter and Claude 3.7 Sonnet that the checkpoint feature was no longer visible anywhere in the UI, with no reproduction steps or error message captured.

The Dosu bot cited documentation saying checkpoints were an experimental opt-in since v3.3.15 and enabled by default since v3.7.7, and suggested enabling them in Advanced Settings; this was not confirmed by a maintainer.
