How do I open config.json in Continue when the gear icon opens the settings UI?
In recent versions of Continue (as of April 2025), clicking the settings gear icon opens a settings UI instead of config.json, which makes editing many settings harder. The settings UI is incomplete, so how do I get back to editing config.json directly?

Status: fixed — the issue was closed as completed in the thread, though no version number is named.
The workaround that worked for the reporter: click the MCP servers icon in the chat interface to reach config.json. This is the direct route to the file when the gear icon opens the settings UI.
A contributor changed the gear icon in the assistant selector list so it always shows instead of only appearing on hover, saying this should make the settings entry point clearer. The contributor also said the issue can be reopened if there are other ideas for making config.json access clearer, so commenting on the issue is a reasonable next step if the workaround isn't enough.
General advice: config.json holds provider and API credentials, so avoid pasting its contents into logs or chat messages.
Did this work for you? What a GitHub user tried on GitHub (Partly worked)
Clicked the settings gear icon expecting config.json to open, but the new settings UI appeared instead. The reporter found a workaround by clicking the MCP servers icon in the chat interface to reach config.json.

A contributor changed the gear icon in the assistant selector list so it always shows instead of only on hover, saying this should make the settings entry point clearer. The thread does not confirm whether this change resolved the problem.
