Why does Continue only execute the last of multiple tool calls in one response?
In Continue v1.1.23 on VSCode 1.99.3 (macOS) with a local LLM, when one assistant response contains multiple function or tool calls, only the last tool call is executed. The reporter traced this to streamNormalInput.ts and its selectCurrentToolCall logic. Is there support or a plan for handling multiple tool calls in a single response?

This issue was closed as NOT_PLANNED on 2025-08-17 after being marked stale, so no fix was released in this thread. On 2025-04-28, a Continue contributor said the topic was on the radar, but the thread does not contain a patch, workaround, or target version.
The reporter identified the cause in the v1.1.23-vscode code at gui/src/redux/thunks/streamNormalInput.ts, around selectCurrentToolCall: when the model returns several tool calls in one response, only the last one is selected and executed. No reproduction steps or configuration changes were provided, so this appears to be a limitation of that version rather than a misconfiguration.
If you hit this behavior, the practical takeaway is that Continue v1.1.23 does not support parallel tool calls in a single response. General advice only: try a newer Continue release in case parallel tool-call handling changed, and if you control the model prompt, ask the model to emit one tool call per response or make the calls sequentially so each one is executed. The thread contains no tested workaround.
Did this work for you? What a GitHub user tried on GitHub (Outcome unclear)
The reporter inspected streamNormalInput.ts in the v1.1.23-vscode tag and found that selectCurrentToolCall fetches only the last tool call. No reproduction steps, config changes, or command-line attempts were included.
