Remote MCP (SSE) servers work in Claude Desktop but not Cline — fix?

Cline 3.5.1 on Windows 11 fails to connect to remote MCP servers exposed over SSE via supergateway, while the same mcpServers config works in Claude Desktop. The supergateway log shows the handshake and tools/list responses completing, but Cline never establishes the connection. How do I get remote SSE-based MCP servers working in Cline?

Status: fixed. Cline added SSE support in an extension update released on 2025-04-07. Update the VS Code extension to the latest version and add the SSE server directly in the extension UI — no mcp.json editing needed.

In Cline 3.5.1, only stdio MCP servers were supported, so a remote endpoint like supergateway's SSE bridge could not connect. The supergateway log in the issue confirms the bridge itself was healthy: it completed the MCP handshake and returned tools/list and resources/list responses, but Cline never established the client connection.

Until you update, the only suggested workaround in the thread was for Windows stdio servers: replace a plain npx command with cmd /c npx so the process is spawned through the Windows command interpreter. That was a suggestion, not confirmed by the reporter.

General advice: keep the SSE bridge bound to localhost, and only connect to MCP servers you trust, since the local stdio process can execute commands on your machine.

What a GitHub user tried on GitHub (Didn't work)

Ran supergateway to bridge a stdio MCP server to SSE on localhost:8000, then configured Cline with command npx and args ["-y","supergateway","--sse","http://localhost:8000/sse"]. The bridge logs showed a successful handshake and tool/resource listings, but Cline could not connect.

What @zhibisora tried on GitHub (Outcome unclear)

Suggested a Windows workaround for stdio servers: use command cmd with args "/c", "npx", "-y", "<server>" instead of plain npx, referencing issue #1948. It was a suggestion and was not confirmed in the thread.
